What drives our seemingly endless fascination with supervillains like the Joker? Posing the question is much like asking why evil itself intrigues us. The obsession is much higher than for that of a normal superhero.
The villains exist outside the realms of reality and morality. They have twisted sense of logic and no limitations in their resources to stop them.
Supervillains can simply do the things heroes can't even imagine. They are not the simple black and white personality but a rather unconventional one. They let us face our own fears and even challenge them.
Our 'anti-social' and 'want and get' image strives in this presence of a 'out of the box' mystery. They baffle us. The villains are essentially free, with no guilt shackles to bind them. Evil explores the dark themes for us and is the true nature of a private self. Their philosophy is often practical and simple.
Desperation brings out the worst and the best in us, but villains help us truly identify our actions. They are motivated not by greed or grief, but by a sense of fun and complex thinking. Even their darkest of feats are followed by a 'hard to argue against' philosophy. Hannibal, for instance, has a profound theory on his deranged thoughts that as much as I like to hate it, can be related and agreed to. Joker didn't want the Batman to die, on the contrary he respected him. Even Moriarty is the answer to Sherlock's nonchalance and boredom.
In the end, the real reason for supervillains will always be to make the heroes look all the more moral and righteous, but the mind of an individual will always love a good villain, as in the end, they're who matter the most.
